Monthly Archives: July 2010

One more month at home in Virginia, then I’m off to China!  I’m not completely sure I’ll be able to access this blog there, so here’s hoping.

I’m looking forward to legit jiaozi (dumplings), meeting all my kids for the school year, and traveling around whenever I get the chance.

A friend who will also be in China this fall gave me a book that I’m reading  right now, called China Road, by a British NPR correspondent, Rob Gifford.  Great read.  He basically took a 3,000 mile road trip from Shanghai to Korgaz (the utter western edge of China) after being a correspondent in Beijing for some 16 or so years.  The conversations he relates with the people along that huge stretch of country are really interesting, and it’s helping me understand a little bit more about China and what the dynamics are like in some places there.  If anyone is interested in learning more about China as a modern world power, this book is quality.

Once my work visa comes through, I think it might finally sink in that I’m really going…it seems like a far-off dream right now.  I can’t wait.
